Tucked away up a side street, a little away from the centre of the old town of Alvor on Portugal’s Algarve, is O Alcaide Restaurant. This unassuming little gem is something of a favourite with the visitors of all nationalities who return to the Algarve year after year to bask in the warm Portuguese sun, play on the sweeping white sand beaches and sample some of the tastiest fare that Portugal has to offer.
O Alcaide Restaurant could be described as “small but perfectly formed”, its pleasant dining room the perfect place for a romantic meal for two, a business dinner, a group celebration or a pleasant meal for a family gathering.
Children are made to feel especially welcome and are kept entertained and well fed and watered throughout their meal, leaving the older generation free to relax and enjoy their food.
Located in an old wine cellar, the décor is typical of the region and of its time, with plenty of carved dark wood to set off the light table cloths and wall decorations to perfection.
This is a family run restaurant, and the family atmosphere guarantees you a warm welcome by Francesco, Lilia and their team. The extended family also run the Five Crowns Bar and Restaurant on Alvor Beach where you can expect a similar welcoming vibe.
There is a varied wine list with plenty of interesting local offerings from Alvor’s surrounding area as well as some vintage international favourites, and the sommelier is very helpful with recommendations of suitable bottles to complement your chosen dishes. Finish your meal with a Ruby, Tawny or Pale Port wine for a traditional taste of Portugal.
Expect to pay around 60 euros for a meal for two with starters, mains, desserts and wine. The restaurant is not large so aim to arrive early or book in advance if you are visiting O Alcaide Restaurant in high season.
