One of the highlights of a visit to Braga, Portugal, is exploring the Tibaes Monastery, a historical sight which is located some five miles from Braga city centre. For most visitors, the monastery makes for an interesting full or half-day excursion from their base in the heart of Braga.
However, for the lucky few who are able to secure a room at the Hospedaria Convento de Tibaes, the delights of the monastery are right here on the doorstep for your enjoyment.
The Tibaes Monastery has its origins in the Benedictine order, and was declared the official home of the order in Portugal and Brazil in 1567.
There has been a building on the site for even longer — as far back as the turn of the 10th and 11th century, however it was reformed several times over the centuries and is now famous for its extravagant Rococo décor in the church and for its mix of architectural styles throughout.
The Hospedaria Convento de Tibaes is located within the monastery grounds. The hotel has an air of exclusivity, both for its location and décor and for the fact that it offers just nine rooms for guests to choose from. Of these three are doubles and three singles, each decorated in modern, minimalist style with heavy traditional notes mixed in, creating a unique, contemporary feel. All rooms benefit from private en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, direct-dial telephone and LCD television.
The hotel’s restaurant, the Restaurant L’Eau Vive, is open every day except Monday, serving tasty traditional dishes from the far corners of Portugal, and there are several other eateries within easy reach. Guests staying at the hotel can benefit from a free guided tour of the monastery and its grounds.
The Hospedaria Convento de Tibaes is approximately 8.7 km/5.4 miles from the Braga city centre, where you can visit the Cathedral of Braga, the Cathedral Museum, the Biscainhos Museum of the decorative arts, and the Nogueira da Silva Museum.
Guests can enjoy room service and a guided tour through the monastery, and when you are ready to leave the hotel there is plenty to do and see nearby.
Head for central Braga and soak up the atmosphere in the Praça da Republica, at the magnificent Cathedral, and wondering through the narrow streets of the oldest city in the country.
