Praxis Restaurant is home of some of the best beers in Coimbra. Known as the city’s leading brewery, it is located on the edge of the town and is something of a well-kept secret amongst locals and the large student population of the University of Coimbra, Portugal’s oldest seat of learning.
The brewery was established back in 2001 with a mission of putting Coimbra firmly on Portugal’s gastronomic map. So far it has made great strides in achieving this. A team of talented and innovative brewers have spent years perfecting their unique recipes, selecting the best ingredients and combining them, with the help of the unique mineral content of Coimbra’s spring water, to create a diverse selection of house beers from pilsner to amber and from dark to white.
Praxis Restaurant quickly went on to build a name for itself and in 2009 the brewery opened to the public as an eating and drinking destination with a difference. The focus has never moved from doing what the team do best — instead they now offer a delightful setting in which to savour it.
Drinkers and diners can catch a glimpse of the huge fermenting capsules and brewing technology through the large glass windows that separate them from the public area.
The décor is predictably modern yet comfortable and welcoming, with plenty of wood, contemporary art and sleek lines in evidence. There is a large, covered and heated outdoor seating area as well as the interior room, making this a popular choice for food and drink all year round.
Many people come to Praxis Restaurant purely for the beer, but to do so would be to miss out on the tasty food on offer. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and offers simple, well-made favourites such as hot dogs, burgers and sandwiches as well as more adventurous seafood and delicious steaks.
With many restaurants in Portugal serving the same traditional yet delicious fare, a simple, modern menu such as this can make for a refreshing change.
