A Lúria Restaurant is situated just outside the historic city of Tomar in a rural location on the road to the Castelo do Bode lake, close to the village of São Pedro de Tomar. It was opened in 1979 by Francisco Domingos who over the past thirty years has transformed it from a long, dark, narrow tavern to a large and comfortable restaurant that is well known and liked by Tomar’s residents and popular amongst its visitors.
A Lúria still retains its history through its name which literally means the rabbit warren. However, today there is little else left of its past. The building has been transformed into one of Tomar’s largest restaurants, offering plenty of room for its capacity of 110 diners in two large and airy rooms and a separate café area.
Its setting high in the Ribajeto offers panoramic views over the rolling hills to the Castelo do Bode lake and the mountains beyond. There is ample off road car parking in front of the restaurant and the premises are fully adapted for wheelchair users.
As with most restaurants in the area, A Lúria Restaurant serves hearty local cookery, with some well-executed favourites from other parts of Portugal thrown in for good measure. Francisco and his wife, Fatima, pride themselves on preparing good food with rustic flair. House specialities include baked goat, giblet rice, roasted cod and a number of dishes using delicious organic local eggs and the fresh mushrooms that grow in the Ribatejo region of Portugal during the spring. Desserts are an equal mix of inventiveness and local flavour, such as an original bean and orange dessert and the traditional Fatias de Tomar, or Slices of Tomar.
This is an ideal restaurant for family dining and caters well to groups. Average price per head is €20 and the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday and for lunch on Sunday.
