O Tabuleiro restaurant is located just off Tomar’s main square, the Praça da República, on one of the most famous streets of the historic centre. Known as the Corredoura, Rua Serpa Pinto offers magnificent views of the Igreja São Baptista that dominates the square, right up to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Convento de Cristo and Templar Castle beyond.
O Tabuleiro is a fairly unprepossessing restaurant from the outside, but its outside tables, set on a wide pavement area, provide an excellent opportunity to appreciate Tomar’s architectural heritage whilst enjoying a hearty meal at one of its best value restaurants. On warm summer evenings the Praça de República and surrounding streets are full of locals and tourists from all over Portugal and beyond, strolling or simply hanging out in the late evening sun, making O Tabuleiro restaurant a great place for people watching.
The interior is modern, though by no means cutting edge, but it does make for a welcome alternative to the predominantly rustic-styled restaurants that are typical of this area of Portugal. The menus are multilingual and provide plenty of varied options, perfect for families and mixed groups. Portion sizes for main courses are available in small or large, and even the small portions are generally large enough to satisfy most appetites. With main courses priced around €7 for a small and €14 for a large, and drinks competitive priced, this certainly makes for a cost-effective meal option.
The food is typically Portuguese cooked in a traditional homemade style, featuring dishes such as stewed veal, oven-baked ribs, baked fish and rice dishes. There is a good wine list with some well known national labels as well as locally produced bottles from the Templar estate.
The quality of cooking is very good, made all the better by the warm and attentive service that typifies the restaurant. In general O Tabuleiro restaurant is a good family-friendly, local hang out in central Tomar offering good food and good value. Payment by both cash and credit card is accepted, a bonus when travelling.
